A couple more pics and a big GO GREEN!

This was dusk in our tent on Saturday

Hard to believe I won't be there for this game this weekend but since this should start to be a regular occurrence now, I will be able to watch us beat the crap out of Michigan in three years as well.

Check out what is going on at my old fraternity house today

Wish I could be there...this will be epic...

Kelli and I are off to Brussels this weekend. Got a really good deal at a SWEET hotel with wireless internet to watch the game tomorrow. It is a holiday weekend (German Unification Day - for when the wall fell - pretty cool) so we are off on Monday.

Here's one more photo from Oktoberfest, there are so many good ones.

Amsterdam, Prague and Oktoberfest

wow

This past week has been one of the craziest I have ever had. There are way too many stories to place here as well as some that can NOT be placed here to protect the innocent. I will try and break it down city by city so here it goes.

Amsterdam

It is everything you think it is. Dr. Seuss had to visit before he wrote some of his books. Not one straight line or right angle in the whole place. Builders must have visited a few "coffee shops" before drawing up their plans for sure. We spent hours sitting in the parks sipping beers watching people. Lots of English language as well so a good break in session for Ryan, Dave, John and Brian.
We spent a lot of time in the Nine Streets area where they filmed Ocean's 12. We found some places that the crew (Brad Pitt, George Clooney etc.) We had some Chinese food. Some Brazilian steaks. Some Thai. And of course, some Mexican.
Brian had to skip out on Prague but was going to meet us up in Munich. It's good for him because the following happened.
Planes Trains and Automobiles
What happened Tuesday was straight out of the movie. After getting a late start, we had to make good time to get to Wiesbaden to catch out train to Prague by 3. About 2/3 of the way home, stuck in a traffic jam, in the far left lane of the Autobahn, my clutch fails. We crawled off the next exit and were in the middle of German cornfields. The police came by, two trucks tried to drag me to the shop (for quite a few Euro). Luckily, Audi roadside service is pretty quick and they got us to a service shop where virtually no one spoke English. After throwing all of our things in the dealership manager's car, he sped us off to the rental car place and off we went in a beautiful VW Golf. Let's just say this was not the fastest car on the autobahn, especially with 4 guys and a bunch of luggage.
We missed our train and had to settle for the overnight train to Prague that left Frankfurt at 11:30. All ended well as we could chill out a little bit, catch dinner and drive around to see some castles.
Prague
Getting in at 9 am, we headed right out and did some sightseeing for a few hours. Saw Prague Castle, Charles Bridge and St. Nicholas Cathedral. Got a phone call from another friend from MSU, Jeff Place telling us that he was in Prague for a few days. Very cool to hang out and catch up.
Sat in a lot of Beergardens as the weather was perfect. Ended up hitting some clubs and barhopping throughout the night.
Oktoberfest
It is bigger than you think.
There were three Cedar Point sized roller coasters that they set up and tear down each year. I still had not seen all of the rides before we left. The tents are MASSIVE. Each holds about 6,000 people and each was nearly full all of the time.
Got in at about 5 pm and headed straight for the Fest. We met up with Brian and one of his coworkers in the Kafers tent. Ended up "tent-hopping" for the night and meeting and talking to a bunch of local people.
Kelli joined us the following day (Friday) and we spent the better part of the day in the Hofbrauhaus tent. Utter mayhem. The band was jammin and the "Prosits" (toasts) were flying everywhere. We stood in the center section around all of the high tables. Giant beer after giant beer and bar maids with big baskets of sausage and pretzels. People were chanting, clapping, yelling, passing out and hugging. We ended the night at the actual Hofbrauhaus in downtown Munich sitting down for dinner. Great day.
Saturday was our final day, so we were primed to go out with a bang. I had organized a table for us with a friend from work (Thanks Axel!) at the Ochsenbraterei tent. We had to be there by 9 am and the beer started flowing right away. In what became the highlight of my year, Wolgang (one of Axel's friends) asked Kelli to go on stage with him and sing "Country Roads". Yes THAT Country Roads by John Denver. For some reason, Germans have taken a liking to that song. I was expecting them to be with a group of people singing or dancing around.
I could not have been more wrong.
There was Kelli, all by herself, perched on Wolfgang's shoulders, wearing a black top hat conducting the Oompah band and the 6,000 people in the tent. Absolutely amazing. I have been promised video from Axel but I doubt it will do the scene justice. The day continued on as you would expect, lots more singing, more friends as we also met up with Jim Heskett from MSU as well.
All in all, I can't wait to do it again......just not right now

Wild Weekend

We survived Oktoberfest and had an amazing weekend! The tents are gorgeous and people are so friendly. We will be sure to post pictures and tell more stories later this week. There are lots of stories...

Working from home today as my parked car was hit by a drunk driver last night around 10pm. We were heading to bed when we heard a crash and just assumed our new neighbors were throwing out large amounts of trash into the dumpster. Went downstairs at 7:30am and there was glass all over my car and in front of my car - none of it was mine. The car in front of me must have gotten the greater beating. However, the driver hit my rear driver side right by the gas tank and the car is undriveable. The front of the car was crushed, too. Had to call the German police to get the story. My admin is now helping to figure out how Opel will get the car, etc, etc. Dan and I aren't having good luck with our cars lately...

Prague

The boys successful reached Prague via train this morning and have been sight-seeing and bar hopping. They were able to meet up with another friend in Prague for business - Jeff Place believe it or not! Some how the Delt Sigs unite all over the world...they are off to Munich tomorrow.

Amsterdam

Well, from the little they told me and from a few pictures that I saw, the boys enjoyed Amsterdam, and arrived in Germany today. They had planned to spend only a few hours in Wiesbaden and then head to Prague but Dan's clutch in his Audi blew out on the A3! Audi was very helpful, but getting a loner car made them miss their train departure out of Frankfurt. All in all, I think this was a good thing as the guys got to chill, relax, and shower.

We also took the guys around Wiesbaden, had a hearty German meal, and did a quick castle tour. It was SO nice to have friends in our home. It felt like old times - a lot like how it was when we lived in Troy.

Just dropped them off at the train station in Frankfurt to catch an 11:30 pm departure for Prague. Hopefully the clutch will be the first and last issue on the trip...more to come.

Romania

I traveled to Timisoara, Romania last week - what an experience. I guess I should research where I go prior to leaving as I didn't know that the Fall of Communism in Eastern Europe started in Timisoara in December 1989 and that over 1100 people were killed there in the revolution. I guess I was only 13 and didn't pay attention to world events, but as I went on a tour the first night, I was amazed that so much has happened to this country 13 years ago and how far it appears to have come.

There is a lot of investment in Romania but it looks pretty warn down. I visited three suppliers while there. Average labor rate there is 1 Euro 20 cents. The people seem to be hard working and most were young. The roads in the city were jammed packed all day. However, the roads leading out to the country side were pretty rough. In November I will head to Ukraine where they make 70 Euro cents an hour. The Ukraine's labor rate is lower than China's...

Dan has been busy this past week at their big trade show. However, we were able to see each other one night this weekend. I also went to the Frankfurt Auto Show this week which is HUGE! However, it's little European car after little European car...

Dan's friends flew in this morning and they are in Amsterdam the next few days, then Prague, and end in Munich. I join them in Munich on Friday for Oktoberfest. I hope I can hang with the boys!

Perfect Weekend Weather

Wanted to throw on a couple photos we took this weekend as well. There was yet another festival in town this week. This one was called Taunusstrassefest and was a little more "upscale" than the previous two. Here is a photo of our backyard park, the weather was about 82 and sunny all weekend.

bye!

Tons O' Photos

Been pretty bad with the pics lately. Sorry, I will get better.

Here are some more pictures from Alpena and Detroit during our trip home and the Munich trip that Kelli and I took a couple weeks back.

Munich is AWESOME! I can not wait to go back in two weeks for Oktoberfest. We drove down to the Alps to see Neuschwanstein Castle as well. It was a little cloudy so the mountains were pretty covered up. Maybe next time!

I will be at a trade fair for the next ten days and then it is off to Amsterdam, Prague and Oktoberfest with some old friends from MSU - John Mauck, Brian Chambers and Ryan Knowles. Kelli will be meeting us up in Munich.

Take care all!

Chloe has arrived!

About two weeks ago, I mentioned that Julie and Tom were awaiting the arrival of their daughter. Literally as I wrote that post, Chloe Elisabeth Mavis was born. Mom, Dad, and baby are doing well and Dan and I can't wait to meet Chloe at Christmas!

Idea

Someone should create bracelets for New Orleans. Along the same lines as the Lance Armstrong Bracelets. Mini Mardi Gras Bracelets with the Purple, Green and Gold of the beads you see everywhere and are a symbol of the city.

2 bucks each, covering costs, the rest to charity

Someone should do this

Refugee....

...is not a word to be used by Americans in America is it? This is a word for Iraqis, Africans and Eastern Europeans right? What will these people do?

This is bizarre

New Orleans

I think that people here are beginning to be transfixed by what is going on. The BBC and the German newspapers are all over the coverage. I haven't had this sick feeling in my stomach since 9/11.

www.redcross.org

do it

Terrible

This New Orleans tragedy is terrible. I have had a few VERY good times in that city and wish that there was something that I could do. So sad, so sad.......

Updates this weekend on everything that I (we) have been up to over the weekend. Let's just say that I unpacked my toiletry case yesterday for the first time since I left for the US four weeks ago....

miss you all
